The film that established Golden Harvest as an industry force to be reckoned with!
Introducing 88 Films' Blu-ray (Region A) release for 1971's The Invincible Eight. This film unites some of Hong Kong cinema's most legendary names in a sweeping tale of vengeance, loyalty, and fate. Directed by Lo Wei – who would later guide Bruce Lee to global stardom in The Big Boss and Fist of Fury – this 1971 Golden Harvest production marked the studio's bold entrance into the martial arts arena, setting the tone for a new era of kung fu filmmaking.
The story follows eight warriors, each driven by the same burning purpose: to avenge the brutal murders of their fathers at the hands of a ruthless general. Among them are two of the era's most iconic stars – Nora Miao (The Way of the Dragon) and Angela Mao (Enter the Dragon) – whose fierce determination and commanding presence anchor the film's emotional and physical battles alike. Backed by an ensemble that includes Sammo Hung, James Tien, and Lydia Shum, The Invincible Eight balances breathtaking action choreography with heartfelt human drama.
Sammo Hung, serving both in front of and behind the camera, orchestrates some of the most kinetic swordplay and hand-to-hand sequences of the early Golden Harvest period. The result is a film that fuses the stylized elegance of wuxia storytelling with the raw intensity that would soon define 1970s Hong Kong action cinema. From the intricate duels to the blood-soaked finale, Lo Wei's direction ensures that every clash carries both physical and emotional weight.
